Allison Cohan LCSW, illuminates

a tangible pathway toward your goals.

Allison is a licensed clinical social worker with a refined expertise in psychotherapy, offering both in-person sessions in the Denver metro area and remote services across Colorado and California. Born and raised on the East Coast, she brings a blend of rigorous academic training and hands-on clinical experience.
Allison’s academic journey began at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, where she majored in Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience. Her career started in the acute inpatient setting at Four Winds Hospital, where she worked with young children. Through this intensive early exposure she developed an enduring interest in imagination and creativity as it intercepts and protects against traumatic events.
Later, relocating to Cambridge, Massachusetts, Allison spent several years at McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School Affiliate. There, she contributed to groundbreaking longitudinal research on substance abuse before returning to clinical work, this time with adolescents confronting anxiety, depression, eating disorders and self-harm in residential care. These formative experiences in elite, intensive hospital-based settings allowed her rich exposure to complex casework and cutting-edge treatment.
Allison earned her Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from Boston College, graduating with honors, and quickly distinguishing herself in the field. She began her postgraduate career specializing in eating disorders and exercise addiction at Monte Nido & Affiliates in Malibu, California. Under the direct mentorship of Carolyn Costin, a globally recognized expert and leader in the field, Allison further refined her approach to treatment, integrating clinical precision with deep empathy, insight and intuition.
Upon moving to Denver, Allison enjoyed working with both undergraduate and graduate students in the Health and Counseling Center at the University of Denver prior to shifting full time into her private practice. Drawing from these varied experiences, Allison brings a layered approach to therapy. At this point in her career, she works with a wide spectrum of clients across ages and backgrounds.
One commonality that has emerged in her practice is partnering with individuals in creative arenas—artists, thought leaders, entrepreneurs and others who may not identify as creative in title but who are navigating creative complexity in some form or another. These creative arenas often come rife with high expectations and drive, self-doubt, perfectionism and burnout.
Allison’s current constellation of skills includes narrative therapy techniques, Internal Family Systems (IFS) for which she is formally Level One trained, existential and feminist theory as well as somatic therapies like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Through these lenses, Allison is able to  offer a comprehensive approach to her work that blends cutting-edge training with a deep understanding of the human experience.
In her psychedelic preparation and integration work, she supports clients from a perspective grounded in therapeutic training while also leaving ample room for the spiritual inquiry and mystery that has long been disavowed in our modern, medical, patriarchal and colonialist model of what healing is “allowed” to be.
